Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining the endometrium grows outside the uterus.
This misplaced tissue still responds to your monthly hormonal cycle. It thickens, breaks down, and bleeds, but has no way to leave the body causing inflammation, scar tissue, and pain.
Most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the outer surface of the uterus, and the pelvic cavity wall. In more advanced cases, it can involve the bladder or intestines.
When it grows on the ovaries, it can form cysts called endometriomas often called “chocolate cysts” for their dark, blood-filled appearan
Symptom severity doesn’t always match disease severity some women with extensive endometriosis have mild symptoms, while others with minimal
Ultrasound or MRI can identify endometriomas and other abnormalities. A confirmatory diagnosis, however, usually requires laparoscopy the same minimally invasive procedure used for treatment (see below), where a camera is inserted into the pelvic cavity to directly view, and if needed biopsy, endometrial tissue.
Treatment is approached as a ladder, starting with the least invasive option that controls symptoms:
A note on recurrence: endometriosis can return after treatment, including after surgery, since medical management addresses symptoms rather than permanently eliminating the underlying tissue. Your doctor will discuss a monitoring plan appropriate to your case.
Laparoscopic treatment is the gold-standard surgical approach for endometriosis when hormonal therapy isn’t enough, or when the priority is preserving or improving fertility.
How it works: a small incision near the navel allows a thin camera (laparoscope) into the pelvic cavity. The surgeon directly visualizes endometrial implants, scar tissue (adhesions), and endometriomas, and removes or ablates them using fine surgical instruments through the same small incisions.
What it treats in the same sitting: endometrial implants, chocolate cysts (endometriomas), and pelvic adhesions causing pain or blocking the fallopian tubes diagnosis and treatment happen together, without a separate procedure.
Dr. Devang Patel, our laparoscopic surgeon, performs advanced laparoscopic techniques for endometriosis at Divine Women’s Hospital, combining precision with minimal downtime for patients.
Endometriosis is a common contributing factor in infertility, largely through scar tissue and inflammation affecting the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Laparoscopic treatment can improve natural conception chances in many cases. For patients where endometriosis is affecting fertility more significantly, treatment may be paired with infertility endoscopy or IVF evaluation.
Our gynecologists, Dr. Devang Patel and Dr. Amrita Patel, are experienced in diagnosing and managing endometriosis and its symptoms from first consultation through hormonal management or laparoscopic treatment. This combination of medical and surgical expertise is why Divine Women’s Hospital is a trusted choice for endometriosis treatment in Ahmedabad.
There’s no guaranteed permanent cure, but treatment from hormonal therapy to laparoscopic surgery effectively manages pain and can significantly improve fertility outcomes. Recurrence is possible, so ongoing monitoring matters.
It depends on severity and goals. Hormonal therapy works well for many mild-to-moderate cases. Laparoscopic treatment is generally recommended for moderate-to-severe disease, persistent pain despite medication, or when fertility is a priority.
Not always many women with endometriosis conceive without treatment. But it is a common contributing factor in infertility, and treatment can improve the odds when it is a factor
Most patients resume normal activity within about a week, thanks to the minimally invasive approach.
If you have persistent pelvic pain, pain during periods that disrupts daily life, pain during intercourse, or are having difficulty conceiving, it’s worth getting evaluated — earlier diagnosis generally means more treatment options.
