What Is Diagnostic Laparoscopy?
A small incision is made near the navel and a camera is passed into the abdomen, which is gently inflated with gas so the organs can be seen. The uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and surrounding tissue are examined directly on a monitor.
One or two further small incisions allow fine instruments to be used if treatment is needed. The incisions are typically around half a centimetre.

Diagnostic laparoscopy is considered where the answer will change your treatment:

- Suspected endometriosis, which frequently cannot be confirmed any other way

Diagnosis and Treatment in One Sitting

What to Expect and Recovery
The procedure is done under general anaesthesia and usually takes under an hour, longer if treatment is needed. You will be asked not to eat beforehand and to arrange for someone to take you home.
Because the incisions are small, most women are mobile within hours and back to routine activity considerably sooner than after open surgery. Your team will give you a timeline for your own procedure rather than a general figure. Shoulder-tip discomfort for a day or so afterwards is common and harmless — it comes from the gas used during the procedure.
Is Diagnostic Laparoscopy Worth It?
It is surgery, and it should not be advised casually. The test is worth doing when scans and blood tests have not answered the question, and when what we find would genuinely change your treatment.
