What Is Hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is an examination of the inside of the uterus using a hysteroscope — a thin telescope with a camera, passed through the cervix. Fluid or gas gently opens the cavity so the walls can be seen clearly.
Because it goes through the natural opening of the cervix, there is no incision on the abdomen at all. Most procedures are done as day care, and many women go home within a few hours.
Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopy
A diagnostic hysteroscopy examines the cavity and takes samples if needed. An operative hysteroscopy treats what is found, using fine instruments passed through the same telescope.
In practice the two often happen together, which is the point — diagnosis and treatment in one appointment and one anaesthetic, rather than two.

What to Expect
Hysteroscopy is usually performed under general or regional anaesthesia, though a brief diagnostic look can sometimes be done with minimal anaesthesia. It is scheduled after your period has finished, when the lining is thin and the view is clearest.
You will be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand, and to arrange for someone to take you home. The procedure itself commonly takes between fifteen and forty minutes depending on what is being treated.
Recovery
Mild cramping and light spotting for a day or two afterwards are normal and settle with simple pain relief. Most women return to routine activity quickly.

When Hysteroscopy Is the Right Test
Ultrasound is excellent at many things, but it cannot always show what is inside the cavity — small polyps, thin adhesions and a septum are all frequently missed. Where the history points inside the uterus, looking directly is what settles it.
It is not needed for every woman with heavy bleeding or every failed IVF cycle. It is advised where the finding would actually change your treatment.
