The Stages of Labour

When to Come In
Call us and come in if:
- Contractions are regular, strong and about five minutes apart
- Your waters break, whether or not contractions have started
- You have any vaginal bleeding
- Your baby's movements are reduced
- You are unsure — always better to be checked than to wait at home worrying
If this is not your first baby, come in sooner rather than later, because labour is often faster.
How We Support a Normal Delivery
You are encouraged to move, change position and use what helps. Your baby's heart rate is monitored so that any change is picked up early, and epidural pain relief is available whenever you want it.
Underwater birth is an option for suitable pregnancies, and warm water eases labour pain for many women even if delivery itself happens out of the pool.
A birth companion is welcome. Continuous support during labour is one of the few things consistently shown to improve the experience and the outcome.
When a Caesarean Becomes Necessary
Sometimes labour does not progress, or your baby's heart rate pattern, the position of the placenta, your baby's position or your own condition makes a caesarean the safer choice.
