Pregnancy Care & Antenatal Checkups in Ahmedabad

Good pregnancy care is mostly unglamorous. It is the same checks, done properly, at the right time — and it is what turns problems into things that were caught early.

Here is what each stage actually involves, so you know what to expect at every visit and why none of them are optional.

At Divine Women's Hospital, Ahmedabad, Dr. Devang Patel, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, follows you through the whole pregnancy rather than handing you between clinics.

Your Antenatal Schedule at a Glance

Visits become more frequent as your pregnancy progresses, because that is when changes matter most.

First Trimester — Weeks 1 to 12

Your first visit confirms the pregnancy and dates it accurately, which matters for everything that follows. We take a full medical and obstetric history, record baseline blood pressure and weight, and arrange booking bloods — haemoglobin, blood group and antibodies, thyroid function, blood sugar and infection screening.

Between 11 and 14 weeks comes the NT-NB scan, which assesses your baby's growth and screens for chromosomal conditions. Folic acid is started or continued, and any existing medication is reviewed for safety in pregnancy.

Second Trimester — Weeks 13 to 26

Visits are usually monthly. The anomaly scan at around 18 to 22 weeks examines your baby's organs and structure in detail — the most thorough scan of the pregnancy.

This is also when we screen for gestational diabetes with a glucose tolerance test, give the tetanus vaccination, start iron and calcium supplementation, and begin tracking your baby's growth against expected measurements.

Third Trimester — Weeks 27 to Birth

Visits become fortnightly, then weekly. We monitor your baby's growth and position, your blood pressure, and any swelling. Growth and Doppler scans check that the placenta is still working well.

A birth plan is agreed with you well before labour — including pain relief options such as epidural analgesia, and whether underwater birth is suitable for you. Nothing about the delivery should be decided in a rush.

After Your Baby Arrives

Postnatal recovery, feeding support and newborn checks continue through our pre and post pregnancy services, with a consultant neonatologist available for your baby.

Postnatal visits cover your physical recovery, wound or perineal care, feeding, mood and contraception — all of which matter and all of which are easy to neglect in the first weeks.

When to Call Us Between Visits

Do not wait for your next appointment if you notice:

  • Reduced or changed baby movements
  • Any vaginal bleeding
  • Severe headache, visual disturbance or sudden swelling
  • Leaking of fluid
  • Severe or constant abdominal pain
  • Fever, or burning on passing urine

Call +91 90545 74829 at any hour. We would far rather check something that turns out to be normal.

Why Every Visit Matters

Most antenatal visits find nothing wrong, and that is the point. Blood pressure and urine checks are the simplest screening we have for pre-eclampsia, and growth measurement is how a baby who is not thriving is picked up before it becomes urgent.

Skipped visits are where problems get missed. If travel or work makes attending difficult, tell us — we can often group scans and tests into a single trip rather than asking you to come repeatedly.

What Shapes Your Schedule

Your visit pattern depends on:

  • Whether this is a first pregnancy
  • Whether any high-risk factors apply
  • How your baby is growing
  • Your blood pressure, blood sugar and haemoglobin
  • What happened in previous pregnancies
  • How far you are travelling to attend
